Private Label Towels: Building Your Own Brand with an OEM Factory

Private Label Towels: Building Your Own Brand with an OEM Factory

Private label is the fastest route for a hotel brand, spa or retail chain to own a towel line with its own identity without investing in a factory. But the distance between a 'beautiful idea' and a 'product on the shelf' lies in three technical decisions: towel construction, logo application method, and packaging specification. Each decision directly affects MOQ, unit cost and time to market.

Decision 1 — towel construction: choose the yarn type (combed cotton for a premium feel, standard cotton for sharper pricing, bamboo blends for eco positioning), GSM by segment (400-550 for mass retail, 550-700 for premium), and sizes by set (bath 70x140, hand 34x80, face 30x50 cm is the standard retail trio). The towel border is also a brand identifier: patterned dobby borders, satin borders or hidden-stitch hems — each carries different setup costs.

Decision 2 — logo method: jacquard weaving for a recessed/tone-on-tone logo that is luxurious and permanent (requires higher MOQ due to loom setup, typically from 1,000-2,000 pieces); embroidery for a raised, color-flexible logo with lower MOQ and faster turnaround (2-4 weeks); reactive printing for large multi-color patterns, though wash colorfastness needs attention. Five-star hotels usually choose tone-on-tone jacquard; spa and retail chains favor embroidery; fashion brands often try all-over printed designs.

Decision 3 — retail packaging: minimalist paper belly bands for the eco segment, gift boxes for premium sets, clear PP/PE bags for mass retail, or reusable fabric pouches for a sustainability positioning. Packaging heavily affects shipping costs (carton volume) and the unboxing experience — the factor that drives reviews on e-commerce platforms. For goods bound for Japan and Korea, folding style and labeling (including care instructions with JIS/ISO symbols) must be correct from the start.

MOQ strategy for new brands: start with 1-2 hero SKUs instead of a full collection; use the factory's in-stock combed cotton and customize only the logo and packaging to reduce MOQ and lead time; place a first lot of 500-1,000 pieces to test the market before committing to a large jacquard order. A good factory will advise on constructions that share loom setups across multiple SKUs — reducing total setup costs.
